For bridge, seaport, dedicated terminal, navigational channel, and riverside infrastructure projects, completing a design that complies with applicable technical standards is only the first step. Project owners must also demonstrate that the proposed development will not adversely affect maritime operations and that vessels can continue to navigate, turn, berth, and depart safely under realistic operating conditions.

For example, in studying the proposed Phu My 2 Bridge across the Saigon River, in addition to determining the required navigational clearance and the spacing between bridge piers, the project owner must also assess whether seagoing vessels can safely pass through the planned bridge area. One of the most important assessment methods is marine simulation using a modern full-mission bridge simulator that closely replicates real-life navigation and vessel-handling conditions.

The simulation process is generally carried out as follows:

The project owner provides the project documents, proposed design, navigational channel data, hydrological conditions, and information on the largest vessel expected to operate in or pass through the area.

YB Investment, together with its technical partners, develops digital models of the proposed structure, the surrounding marine environment, the navigational channel, and the relevant vessel types.

These models are then integrated into the bridge simulation system, incorporating vessel manoeuvring characteristics, currents, wind, visibility, and other relevant operating conditions.

Experienced pilots, shipmasters, and maritime experts directly operate the simulated vessels through the project area under conditions that closely resemble actual navigation.

Based on the findings, the consulting team prepares a technical report and recommends appropriate solutions relating to design, vessel traffic organisation, operating conditions, and maritime risk management. A key advantage of marine simulation is that the project may not yet exist physically, while the entire proposed development can already be recreated in a digital environment. This allows the project owner to directly observe how vessels pass beneath the bridge, approach the berth, turn within the manoeuvring area, or respond to adverse conditions before making a final investment decision.
